CPK is a type of protein known as an enzyme.  Its job is to add a phosphate group to creatine, which creates a quick source of energy for our cells.  When CPK levels in your body are very high, it usually means that you've had an injury or severe stress to your muscles, heart or brain.  This is because CPK leaks from your tissue into your blood stream.

The test is given to:

• Evaluate what's causing chest pain

• Diagnose a heart attack

• Find out how badly a muscle has been damaged

• Find out if someone has muscular dystrophy

• Detect dermatomyositis and polymyositis
